Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.
I was tasked with designing a set of book covers by Dickens. Those three books were: Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and A Tale of Two Cities.
Through research, I found that all 3 books shared a commonality of being based in a city and that they all initially begin with an upset but ultimately end happily.
I tried to reflect these findings through my concept. The stair-like form of the front covers is to display an emotional feel of climbing stairs. You start off at the bottom but make your way up to the top, just like in Dickens’ books.
When all stood together the books reflect the sharp architecture present within a city landscape.
Overall, the books are a modern representation of a range of classic books.
